Springfield Police Commission learned its four-year Department of Justice settlement agreement has officially ended. The commander of professional standards told commissioners a federal court granted a joint motion for termination on May 7, after finding the department in "substantial compliance" with a 293-paragraph settlement reached in 2022. The department will keep settlement-era policy and software changes under ongoing state POST Commission requirements, and must adopt a new statewide use-of-force reporting system, moving from five "containment levels" to three "type" levels, by September.
Commissioners discussed holding a training session July 8 to review the changes. The board also voted 5-0 to enter executive session to weigh discipline and pay status for two probationary officers under Special Order Nos. 26-004 and 26-117.
