School Committee Adopts Town Hall Rules, New Calendar
School Committee · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Springfield School Committee adopts town hall rules and a revised calendar covering four cyberattack-lost days. Mayor Domenic Sarno chaired as all seven members voted 7-0 on every roll call, including the amended 2026-27 calendar, which makes December 23 and January 4-5 full school days. Vice Chair Naylor's new town hall guidelines set the first forum for October 22 at Van Sickle Academy, requiring written questions a week in advance.
During public comment, Springfield Education Association president Riley Hernandez said "the ongoing predation by for-profit corporations" through the Springfield Empowerment Zone's Alpha School AI-tutoring pilot, which he said charges $40,000 to $70,000 in tuition, needs committee oversight. Officials also said vendor IDX is mailing identity-theft monitoring letters to current employees this week following the district's cyberattack.
