Council Panel Advances Youth Commission Ordinance
Springfield's City Council General Government Subcommittee unanimously forwarded a revived Youth Commission ordinance to the full council.
Select Board · Meeting of June 11, 2026
Springfield's City Council General Government Subcommittee unanimously forwarded a revived Youth Commission ordinance to the full council. Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Colton-Harris and Health and Racial Equity Coordinator Chanel Ford presented the plan, which expands the dormant commission from 11 to 17 members, including 11 student seats for grades seven through 11. After councilors said they felt excluded from the original draft, officials agreed to swap a proposed parks director seat for one reserved for the City Council president or a designee, calling the fix something that "should be able to get through seamlessly." The subcommittee's chair also recommended the council get direct appointment power over three of the 11 student seats.
Councillor Martin and Councillor Victor Davila both backed Councilor LaVar Click-Bruce as the council's likely designee, with Martin calling him "a phenomenal fit." The motion to send the amended ordinance forward passed on a voice vote with no dissent.
