Select Board · Meeting of October 14, 2026

Springfield's council committees heard a pitch for red-light cameras but took no vote on backing the state bill. State Rep. Orlando Ramos told the joint Maintenance and Development and Public Safety committees his House Bill 4087 would let Springfield opt in to photo-only red-light cameras, with the council setting fines up to a $300 state cap, compared with the current $105 police-issued fine. Councilor Jerry Martin called it "a way more superior alternative to like the flock cameras," while Council President Whitfield summarized the plan as cameras "at traffic lights to catch people that's running red lights." Councilors Govan and Davila flagged that the bill's text lacks a clear appeal process, which Rep. Ramos said would need to be built into any future city ordinance.

Councilor Walsh said she plans a separate ordinance targeting license-plate-reader cameras.
