Select Board · Meeting of October 14, 2026

Springfield City Council committee heard a forestry briefing on the spotted lanternfly and other invasive pests threatening local trees and crops. A city forestry staffer identified only as Alex told the committee the lanternfly, first found in Springfield around 2022, has "exploded" into a citywide infestation over the past two years, mainly threatening grapevines, apple orchards and tree of heaven rather than large shade trees. Alex recommended residents remove tree of heaven and scrape egg masses off trees with a plastic scraper, and agreed to post guidance on the city's forestry webpage after the committee chair requested it.

Councilor Govan asked whether killing individual lanternflies breeds hardier survivors; Alex said "I wouldn't be too concerned." The briefing also covered the emerald ash borer, present since 2018, and beech leaf disease, both killing trees citywide, alongside a report that Springfield planted 1,000 trees this spring and plans roughly 750 more this fall.
