SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield City Council subcommittee kept Springfield College's Wilbraham Avenue discontinuance request in committee. College President Mary Beth Cooper said the street near Alden Street has become dangerous, and vice president Mike Chari cited 28 vehicle incidents and eight injuries since 2020. DPW Director Chris Signoli said the 2023 traffic study raised no concerns for his department.
Residents including Pernice Morris and Esther Hudson urged speed bumps and a written guarantee that Alden Street stays open. The chair asked for a diagram and meetings with the neighborhood councils before any vote, and the item was kept in committee by voice vote.
