Springfield council committees vote to bring contested food truck ordinance to full City Council on July 27. A joint session of the Maintenance and Development and Intergovernment, State, and Federal Regulations committees drew dozens of food truck vendors to City Hall on July 20 to challenge an ordinance that took effect July 1 extending the city's existing public-way food truck rules — including a 500-foot buffer from brick-and-mortar restaurants and a $125 annual permit fee — to private property for the first time. DPW's Chris Signoli reported that only eight of an estimated 120 to 140 permitted operators had submitted applications under the new process.

State Representative Carlos Gonzalez, joining online, threatened a court injunction on behalf of vendors and urged rescission: "One neighborhood cannot dictate the changes for the whole city." Council President Tracy Whitfield said the council would recommend to Mayor that existing locations be grandfathered and fines held off, particularly on the 500-foot provision, while the council pursues a legislative reduction of that buffer distance. The Latino Economic Development Corporation offered to fund a bilingual mailing and calling campaign to every food truck vendor if the ordinance were paused for six months.
