Select Board · Meeting of June 9, 2026

Springfield's General Government Subcommittee voted unanimously to send a rent control resolution to the full City Council. The resolution backs state Senate Bill S.1447 and House Bill H.2328, sponsored by former councilor and now State Senator Adam Gomez, which would let municipalities opt into rent stabilization and just-cause eviction rules. City Councilor Jerry Martin made the motion to advance it, with Councilor Davila seconding; Councilor Walsh and Councilor Clay Bruce also voiced support.

The subcommittee cited city data showing 24 percent of Springfield renters are "housing cost burdened," spending 30 percent or more of income on rent. More than a dozen residents and advocates from Springfield No One Leaves, Neighbor to Neighbor Massachusetts and Mass Senior Action testified, with one commenter saying "rents in the last three years have increased 37% in Hampden County." The full council takes up the resolution Monday.
