Select Board · Meeting of June 10, 2026

Springfield's Public Safety Committee reviewed police and school responses to a June 3 Union Station disorder that drew an estimated 50 to 70 young people. Lieutenant Brian Elliott said Springfield police now cover more than two-thirds of the station's 16-hour operating day after Hampden County Sheriff's Department funding for the detail was cut, filling gaps with a new class of 26 officers. Chief Development Officer Tim Sheehan said the Springfield Redevelopment Authority spends approximately $1 million a year on security, all manpower, no cameras.

Assistant Superintendent Jose Escobano said only 81 of the district's roughly 24,000 students were trespassed from the station over the past year, "less than 1 percent." Councilor Davila challenged the staffing plan directly, telling Elliott "something is not working," and pushed for a PVTA rider-registration system that officials said would require state legislative and PVTA advisory board approval.
