Commission Approves Merrick Park Renovation Plan
Springfield's Historical Commission approved a multi-phase Merrick Park renovation and opened debate on protecting a church campus slated for demolition.
Historical Commission · Meeting of June 18, 2026
Springfield's Historical Commission approved a multi-phase Merrick Park renovation and opened debate on protecting a church campus slated for demolition. Commissioners amended First Resource Development Company's park application to require restoration, rather than replacement, of the park's historic post-and-chain fencing before approving the full package of irrigation, landscaping, benches, signage and statue conservation work. Commissioner Kevin Coffee told the board a 2001 Massachusetts Historical Commission survey found the church campus's school and rectory eligible for the National Register, asking "why would we want to pull these things down" when they'd already been found historically significant.
Commissioner Walter Kroll called starting a historic district process "premature." The commission also cleared a federally funded porch roof at 17 Dorchester Street, three replacement signs on Chestnut Street, seven replacement windows on Thompson Street, and a slate-to-asphalt roof swap on Forest Park Avenue, where neighbor Nancy Evans urged approval, calling slate roofs "notoriously difficult to find the leaks."
