Select Board · Meeting of October 5, 2026

Springfield City Council heard sustained public opposition to Flock Safety license-plate cameras and scheduled an ordinance hearing for Oct. 19. Dozens of residents, including Nathan Albright and Terry Owens, urged councilors to ban the roughly 50 cameras installed around the city, citing wrongful-arrest cases tied to similar systems elsewhere and a push to route license-plate data to federal surveillance centers. Councilor Govan confirmed she and Councilor Hurst are drafting the ordinance, saying "I agree that we have to find a happy medium between our privacy and public safety." Separately, the council voted 12-0 to authorize $6 million in bonds for 73 new city vehicles, split among police, fire, general and enterprise funds, and adopted 13-0 a resolution backing Head Start programs against proposed federal rule changes.

Comptroller Patrick Burns reported Springfield closed fiscal 2026 with a $9.2 million favorable budget variance.
