Springfield School Committee learned a September cyberattack exposed Social Security numbers of employees hired before 2008. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jose Escobano said investigators confirmed the exposure for some pre-2008 staff, former employees dating to 2009, volunteers dating to 2001, and contractors, with credit monitoring through IDX now offered.
He reported roughly 65 percent of staff laptops re-imaged out of more than 20,000 devices needing the work. The board separately approved, 7-0 by roll call each time, grants including $400,000 and $350,000 from the Barr Foundation, $96,400 from the Davis Foundation, and contract renewals topping $600,000 for software and $367,880 for background-check services. Vice Chair Monroe Naylor said of an adaptive music program for students with disabilities, "Students that were not talking, they were non-verbal students and now they're talking and now they're singing." Mayor Dominic Sarno noted "the FBI got hacked," framing the district's recovery pace as comparatively strong.
