School Committee Approves Five New Special Ed Posts
Springfield School Committee approved five new Exceptional Learners Department positions despite cost concerns, and signed off on $11.4 million in HVAC funding.
School Committee · Meeting of June 18, 2026
Springfield School Committee approved five new Exceptional Learners Department positions despite cost concerns, and signed off on $11.4 million in HVAC funding. Member Rosa Valentin questioned why six-figure administrative salaries, each over $100,000, would help teachers "begging, pleading for more support in their classroom." Dr. Marisa McCarthy, chief of the Exceptional Learners Department, said the roles would free supervisors to return to hands-on coaching, noting 27 percent of district students are exceptional learners. The committee also approved $2.6 million from the Department of Energy Resources and $8.7 million from Eversource for heat pump systems at two schools, a $30,000 Siemens grant for a Conservatory recording studio, and voted to decommission a vacant school-owned lot on Marion Street.
All votes passed 5-0, with members Gomez and Gresham absent.
