Other Committee · Meeting of July 16, 2026

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Historic Commission approved a Buckingham Street woman's window replacement on the condition the windows be black or another dark color, not white. Petitioner Cynthia Jones, of 181 Buckingham Street, said painting her state-funded Mass Save replacement windows to a darker shade would cost about $250 each, but a commissioner found the manufacturer's standard color line includes black at no extra charge. The panel added language stating "white windows will not be approved" to the motion.

The commission also approved an accessibility ramp near Ingersoll Grove with black-painted railings, window and door work on Bay Street, and reinstallation of the original double doors at 205 St. James Avenue after Springfield Preservation Trust objected to their earlier unauthorized replacement. Two larger items, a multi-building restoration at 77 Maple Street and a solar-panel installation at 117 Florida Street, were continued to August 6 pending state preservation sign-off and roof documentation, respectively.
