SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Historic Commission continued a nonprofit's rehab application for 56 Bay Street, citing concerns the scope would erase historic details. Wayfinders representative Sam Swapitone told the commission the nonprofit is racing to close MassHousing neighborhood stabilization funds by mid-October, but commissioners pushed the case to September 3 after saying unspecified materials for windows, siding and the front porch made the application impossible to evaluate. Separately, resident Cynthia Jones told the commission a July 16 ruling requiring dark replacement windows at 181 Buckingham Street would cost her "$3,900 out of pocket," prompting commissioners to approve a compromise allowing white windows only if existing dark storm windows are retained.
The commission also unanimously approved window and porch repair certificates for properties on Bellevue, Florida, Greenleaf and Chestnut streets, and granted a 90-day extension in a separate case at 77 Maple Street.
