SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Historical Commission waived the nine-month demolition delay on the six-story Chapman and Brooks Block at 135 Lyman Street. Commissioner Vana Nespor voted no; Vincent Walsh, Kevin Coffee and Walter Kroll voted yes. A developer's team said a structural report found the steel frame corroded beyond reuse and that the site would stage construction after the team's courthouse bid.
The Springfield Preservation Trust opposed the waiver. One commissioner said the building "is a danger to the public." The commission also approved a Bowdoin Street house with conditions including black windows, and it continued a Long Hill Street house to March 19 after commissioners spotted mismatched 16-foot dimensions on the site plan.
