SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Historic Commission reworked draft new-construction design guidelines and pushed a scheduled hearing on them to October 1. Commissioners spent a special meeting working through written comments from the Springfield Preservation Trust, submitted July 15, and a separate detailed markup discussed in connection with an entity called "PBKC." The panel agreed to prohibit vinyl and PVC trim on new construction, require gable windows proportionate to the gable itself, and replace "no standard style" language for mixed-era streets with a requirement that new buildings match "one of the multiple historic styles" present. Commissioner Kevin warned against overly complicated rules, invoking "the railroad magnet from New York City who wants to come and build his $3 million house" as cheaply as possible.
Staff said the draft needs further proofreading, with help from a staffer identified only as Ben, before going back to the Preservation Trust for final comment ahead of the rescheduled hearing.
